Babylon Series is a body of work in which I explore ritual performance and ancestral healing work with a Pear Tree friend in my urban backyard. Through acts of devotion, vulnerability, and collaboration with the non-human kin with whom I share a home, I attempt to find belonging and right relationship as an immigrant and settler colonizer living on Cowlitz and Clackamas territory. Referencing the Babylonian Exile and the origins of the Jewish diaspora, I think about the forced assimilation of each generation that has allowed me to thrive in our white supremacist culture. I wonder if I would feel more at home in myself and in relation to the places I inhabit if my ancestral traditions and customs had not been stripped or forgotten. I wonder how my layered identities can be less burdensome and more grounding.
